Iran is the modern name for Persia. It was the centre of a fairly large empire about 2500 years ago. It was also the birthplace of the Zoroastrian religion, to which much of the Persian Empire adhered.

In the 4th century BCE, Persia was conquered by the Macedonians, but this conquest was brief as Alexander's empire died along with him. For some time, the area was known as the Parthian Empire, and was a constant source of frustration for the Romans as they were never conquered by them, despite numerous attempts by Rome. This struggle continued with the Byzantines until Islam spread to the region.

One major aspect of Persia was that most of the people there adhered to the Shi'a form of Islam, while most Muslims elsewhere were Sunnis. This would lead to conflict between Persia and the rest of Islam, but it paled in comparison to external forces of Christianity and the Mongols (who briefly conquered Persia in the 12th century CE).

Persia pretty much passed uneventfully through history, although the emergence of the Baha'i Faith in the 19th century is of importance. The country officially became known as Iran in the 1930's and was a vital supply route for the Soviet Union in World War II.

After the Second World War, a couple of revolutions occurred. The first put the Shah into power as a strong figure, I think around the 1950's or so. The other was in 1979 as the Ayatollahs staged a revolution that deposed of the Shah, who was in the US for medical treatment. Wanting the Shah returned for criminal prosecution, Iranian students stormed the US embassy and took the staff hostage, which led to a 444-day standoff and probably caused President Carter from being re-elected in 1980.

Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has pretty much been an Islamic theocracy, with the Ayatollahs wielding a lot of governmental power in the country. Its more secular neighbour Iraq attempted to take advantage of this with a 1980 invasion, leading to eight years of war that eventually ended in a draw. Iran has sought to defend itself from foreign influence and develop its version of a Shi'a Islamic state. To that end, many believe that Iran has been attempting to construct nuclear weapons which would effectively make them immune from invasion, while other countries, most notably the US, would prefer to have that option available as the belief that Iran is a major source of terrorism exists.

Hope that helps.

Prior to the conflict in the past couple of years, I knew practically nothing at all about Iran. I didn't just go look up a bit of factual information so I could post an educated answer here, instead I'm being honest.

It was not a subject our schools ever really focused on, and so as an American, many of us were just not really aware of any 'need to know' about the country.

I do want to say this: I cannot and will not judge a country just based on media reports, I would want to be able to offer a first hand opinion before I go shooting my mouth off.....

The Conflict between Iran and the USA began back in 1958. Ike authorized the CIA to work with British M16 to over throw the legal government of Iran , and install the puppet Shah, who ruled Iran as a Dictator for many years, elements of that old government went into exile in France, and when the time was right they over threw the Shah, the hostage taking, was in response of Years of looting by fraud, Irans oil and some were CIA agents as Iran suspected along with some oil company execs.
In todays situation the Media Monopoly who sides with Israel and Bush neo cons, forgets to mention these facts in the news today.

Iran was the seat of power of the Assassin sect for 200 years or so. Their leader - the Old Man of the Mountain - ruled by fear and forced Islamic leaders to follow their policies or face assassination. These assassinations were carried out by drugged brainwashed followers promised heavenly rewards of virgins and wonderful food. They were recruited often by being kidnapped, drugged, and given a special visit to the pleasure garden of Almut (don't know the name of the mountain offhand w/o looking) with its beautiful women, food, and drink.

The crusaders tried to negoitate with them with little success. One crudader lord was even killed by the Assassins. When the mongols came thru in the 13th century, they destroyed their stronghold and killed the Old Man by kicking him to death.

An epic event called Gilgamesh took place in Iraq. Babylonians lived in Iraq. They spoke an archaic Dravidian language called Tamil, which is still spoken in South India.
