Most influential
1. Hendrix - He defined new boundaries in the use of the electric guitar.
2. Freddie Mercury - One word. Stagecraft.
3. John Lennon - Set new standards in songwriting (although I actually despise the man).
4. Robert Johnson - The great grand-daddy of the blues. Without the Blues, there would be no rock music today.
5. Elvis - The most impersonated and copied musician of all time. Need I say more?
Worst
Oooooh, where do I start, there's been so much dross down the years. Ironically, quite a lot of the worst musicians somehow went on to become influential ones.

Most Influencial:
Elvis
- gave music a body
Bob Dylan
- gave it a brain
Beatles
- put it together well
Sex Pistols
- effectively deconstructed it again
Grandmaster Flash / PE / NWA
- proto hip-hop, the genre of the future and present day blues.
Worst:
Britney Spears
- pimping manufactured pop through the cult of celebrity
50 Cent
- image driven unimaginitive hip hop
Any pop idol / x factor winner
- for obvious reasons - with the possible exception of Kelly Clarkson
Paris Hilton
- You're having a laugh, right?
Any other manufactured pop 'artist'
- The world has too many svengali'd talentless image clones already.
Sorry, just read above: OMG, can you believe someone can actually say "without Green Day or Offspring there wouldn't be any other punk bands" I mean, good bands both, but that's so ridiculous it's bizarre! If John Lydon were dead he'd be turning in his grave - I'm sure Joe Strummer is!

Charlie Christian - first electric guitar player that mattered.
Miles Davis - a leader of modern jazz
Chuck Berry - almost every rocker can back track to him.
The Beatles - together or solo it's worldly impact won't fade.
Jimi Hendrix - his influence covered multiple genres.
Worst? I'd say:
Disco - lots of dancing and soul music's decline.
Stevie Ray Vaughan's death - no one took his place to bring blues back into the mainstream.
Garth Brooks - for better or worse, country was not the same after he arrived.
Commercial Radio - force fed by specialty with "classic rock" and "smooth jazz" it's either the same thing everyday or a lot of fluff. There is a lot of great music and musicians that never gets aired. Good thing there is the college radio stations.
Lack of education - Looking at some other answers, a lot of of people don't look far enough in music's past let alone SPELL their names right. We have the power at our fingertips to research and learn.

As a list of bands who were an influence to modern music, I would have to give this list...I think these are the people who have helped make music what it is today.
1. Elvis (as much as I don't like him)
2. The Beetles
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Rolling Stones
5. Nirvana, or possibly Metallica
6. Kiss (had to be in here somewhere, their look has spawned a following)
As far as who is the worst...
1. Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilarea (although they have shown many different faces over the years, personally, I don't like anything they have shown me)
Umm, well, ****, I really can't think of anything else I can honestly shouldn't influence music. *shrugs*. I lied, okay, I would have to add almost the whole rap genre on this list.

Gary Numan
David Sylvian
Mick Karn
Kate Bush
David Bowie
All of the above are diverse, original and not afraid to try something different!
Phil Collins
Ronan Keating
Robbie Williams
Pink Floyd (With exception to Roger Waters & Syd Barret)
All content to keep churning out the same old stuff, with little, or no originality!

John Williams, pfor popularising classical guitar music, and his cross-over work with his group Sky. Eric Clapton, for proving you don't need to be an elderly black American to play and sing the blues, and his impeccable guitar work.
Slash, for living the archetypal rock-pig guitarist lifestyle, in bold print.
Mark Knopfler, for the class and quality of his songwriting genius and unique soloing.
Carlos Santana, for decades of free-flowing, simple, sincere, soulful passion.
And all of these five have each reached millions with their work, inspiring countless followers to start to play guitar.
The 5 worst?
To me, the Beatles are highly over-rated. They lacked musicianship, harmony and effort on production. Almost anything by Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys, Elvis kicks their butts.
Oasis. Two fighting ape-like ugly brothers with bad personalities and monstrous egos. One can't sing, the other sucks on guitar. Big success. Why? Just because of the "F*** You" attitude, that's the only reason I can believe.
Robbie Willliams. A solo career from a short, pudgy bad dancer from Stoke. With a flat voice. And no songwriting talent. Who can't play guitar. Big success. Why? Pre-pubescent girls who loved Take that are getting older with him. He can't break America. They look for his talent, and he has none.
Sean Paul. What was that? I'm sorry, once more. You sir, are unintelligible, step away from the microphone. What?
Snoop Doggy Dogg. How, How the F*** do you have a career, a F***ing career, when your F***ing songs can't be played on the m*****F***ing radio because of the constant m*****F***ing swearing. F*** it, I don't know.
I know I'd like to wash his dirty mouth out with soap. F***ing idiot.
