Suppose I decide to download a piece of software or file or anything which has not got a certificate, from the internet, can I run a test on it to find out if it is safe to run ?

Update your antivirus and download the software - instead of selecting the run option, save it to disk and scan the software before opening the executable. A good virus scan program should catch any viruses.

Most antiviruses will enable you to do this. However, just because a program is not, or does not contain, a virus does not mean that it is safe to run. Any program will slow down your computer slightly because it takes up system resources. Some utility programs can damage your computer if used wrongly, as can a program that written by someone who doesn't really know what they are doing. If it's not from a trusted source then don't run it.

i do this on every peice of software i download....simply right click>use your anti-virus and scan the selected file
however, your question is a tad harder, one answer is that yhe file should be ok as your anti-virus should pick it up if it is infected,i use a program called avast 4.7 which will scan every page you visit while on the web so it should let you know if the software is infected, also the program is free
you can download avast 4.7 from http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html,and remember to register(free) within 60 days
good luck

A good anti-virus program will stop a virus dead if you try to download a file and there is a virus. I have McAfee and I just start the download. McAfee has stopped several over the year and warned me of a virus.

hi,i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:
