It is a leg pull, just like "Fetch me some elbow grease" or "Get me a left - handed pencil". I know of an engineering apprentice who was asked to go to another engineering firm with the words "The boss wants you to get him a 1000 holes" so like a fool, he went. However the joke backfired. The guy at the other engineering works ( realising straight away that the poor kid was a greenhorn) took pity on him and said "Sure, give me half an hour" He got a sheet of tinplate, put it under the pillar drill and drilled one thousand little holes in it, then sent the lad back to his boss with it, including a written invoice for the work done!"
