I keep hearing from homsexuals and lesbians that attraction can not be controlled or chosen. I think we as humans have the ability to control almost any aspect of our lives. We choose our clothes, our hairstyle's, what career we want to work in etc...Don't we choose what type of person based on personality attracts us? If you can't control who your attracted to wouldn't you say that lust has swallowed you whole and consumed your mind?

Perhaps you need to clean out your ears? All people have the ability to find people of all types attractive and they can be of any gender - - - acting upon those impulses is another matter. Why should it matter if a person chooses to act upon an impulse toward someone of the same gender? Those that are labeled or accept the label of Gay frequently 'chose' the type of person we want on the basis of appearance personality and a variety of intangible factors. Lust can play into it - - - but that does not mean a loss of control. Peace.

I believe that...

we cannot control what we are attracted to...

If you believe that you can choose then:
Then decide to choose to be attracted to the 13th person you're gonna see on Sept 7!
do this before Sept 6.
And let us know how it work out.
As for me I'm not too good at listening. Show me how and I'll see if I can copy you!

I am attracted to certain things... like empathy.
I don't know why I'm attracted to empathy.
I can't imagine being able to change that. It may become suppressed, so much so, that I feel it is gone.
For example:
every time I help someone then I am put in jail.
how long will it be before I stop helping such that my jailor doesn't see this.
Will I convince myself that helping others is a thing I no longer like?
could be!
depends upon how much authority i believe my jailor has as opposed to myself!

If I believe my jailor then I may believe that I no longer want to help others.

If I believe myself then I still believe that I want to help others but there is this jailor that insist I do otherwise so that is what I allow my jailor to see.
.
.
I am also attracted to nice, kind, gentle, caring, reason, and a whole lot more, and I don't know how to change any of the things that I am attracted to.
Do you?

It's a subconscious choice, not a conscious one. The theory that I find the most logical is the one that everyone has the potential to be bisexual, but we suppress certain aspects of our sexuality due to our experiences while we are growing up. This creates our "orientation", which can change. However, this is very rare, and the mechanism by which it occurs is not yet fully understood. This change is most likely linked to neuroplasticity, which would imply that the stimuli that trigger it are complicated and unique to each individual case. On top of this, the monozygotic twin studies seem to suggest some other condition which creates a predisposition. It seems to me that this condition is most likely hormonal in nature, since no evidence of a genetic code for homosexuality has been discovered yet, to the best of my knowledge. In any case, to suggest that sexual orientation is decided by any sort of conscious choice is illogical. Being the optimist that I am, I would like to think that this conception is due to ignorance. However, the evidence seems to suggest that stupidity and obstinacy are to blame, rather than an easily remedied misconception...

well, unfortunately, we can't......yes, true, we can choose our own clothes, hairstyle, etc......but this is different......it comes from our inner self where all of a sudden, u're attrated to the person.....it's unexplainable.....though......we can't control it,too.....it's like an addictive drug...once u're into it, u crave for more......it's hard to get out but sometimes, in split second, u don't find him attrative anymore.....pretty strange, huh???it's not the mind whose playing the trick but the heart....

I dont think we can control who we are attracted too! I do think we can limit its scope (gender) due to social mores. Even those that are str8 have met someone of the same sex they are attracted too, but they reject those feelings.

Who we are attracted to is governed by our upbringing. It is a subconscious selection, which is quite complicated.
