Here's a trick to eating affordably with great quality:
LUNCH MENUS!!!
Most restaurants have lunch specials, or table d'hote, which are specials in effect betwen noon and 2, or noon and 4 pm. The table d'hote is usually in effect at night.
The best example would be Baton Rouge. Very classy restaurant, very high quality food, but it can get expensive for a student or tight budget. It's known for it's ribs. The rib platter is 22$ (ribs, fries, coselaw) no drink included...but during lunch time, you get the same platter, half the ribs (ok they have to make some type of sacrifice) for 14.99!!! Or you can egt some good burgers there (comes with fries) for 10. 99....
Another example would be any Prince Arthur restaurant. Already the prices are good, but you can always find a souvlaki/chicken brochette platter for an affordable price as the special of the day.
Another very good example is Le Bifteck!!!!!!! known for it's delicious steaks. Evening, it's about 25 or so a person, during lunch it's 15$ for a 8 oz steak, that comes with soup and salad and fries, and warm bread...and dessert!!!!!!!!!! Very HIGH quality!
I'm a local btw, and I have tried so many restaurants, that most are quality.
You can even go to Arahova Souvlaki on St Viateur or on Crescent (downtown) and get a very filling souvlaki pita platter (fries, tzatziki, souvlaki in pita) for 10 bucks!

this is the question of the year. great quality but low priced -- simply does not exist. try for low priced st.laurent blvd. the hot-dogs..and french fries.
to move up..in quality and in price -- go to prince-arthur street any of the greek outfits (make sure the name is either greek or sounds greek) there you will get plenty of rice, and boiled potatoes then fried and chicken or meat brochette -- for a decent price -- lunch only...at night the price doubles...bon appetit.
ps.around concordia and mcgill plenty of self-service restaurants...pizza type -- if cholesterol is not your no.1 headache...enjoy...
ps. btw I am a local...and seldom do i go to these places...which means real locals...cook at home.

the cheapest I've come across Up Town is the Peel St Pub and Old Montreal is the open place, up the street from the Keg.
(I'm not good with names.)
Good luck!
