I have to agree with the first answer, I think Oprah is the most prominent woman celebrity currently. Celine Dion was at one point, probably about the time the movie the Titanic came out, but has declined, in my opinion, when she 'retired' and is only doing Las Vegas shows. Madonna had her time, but her name has been quiet lately - same for Julia Robert and Elisabeth II. Although, other than Oprah, I am tempted to say that Britney Spears has been in the news quite a lot lately as well.

Probably Oprah Winfrey. Apart from the Queen, she is more or less the wealthiest woman in her own right, and unlike Her Majesty, Ms. Winfrey did not start out wealthy. On top of that, more women place real trust in her stardom as she moves beyond the scope of simple entertainment into empathetic connection with people's lives.
