I cannot remember exactly when my period returned as this was over 20 years ago but I don't think it was before two years.
I nursed my son till he was 4 and in the first years, he nursed a lot...I nursed on demand and believed in child led weaning..
I exclusively breastfed him until 8 months when I gave him some banana.
I was in a LaLeche couples group where they were several mothers nursing toddlers and older children and I remember most did not have their periods until at least 15 months..
Some were mad as they were hoping to get pregnant and couldn't.I have heard, though, that one can still get pregnant at times even without a period, but they couldn't
This is nature's way of spacing babies about 2 years or so apart if we had no birth control. It also is said that the less periods you have, the less you fall prey to things like optometrists and breast cancer.

I still breastfeed my daughter at night, and she's now 16 months old. She was 6 months old when I had my first period after giving birth, but they haven't been regular since.
It is true that most women don't have periods while breastfeeding, but unfortunately we aren't part of that group :(
Oh well, not to worry, at least we could give our children the best start in life :)
Good luck for the future!

I am breastfeeding full time as well, getting enough sleep, eating properly and attending aerobics (with the dr's ok) and also started my period earlier than expected. After birth, the bleeding stopped at 4wks then I had spotting at 8wks (I hear this is the warning period) and then a regular period now after the 3rd month.

I got mine after about 4 months. I was told by the lactation consultant at our local Child and Youth Health that it's least likely for periods to return if you nurse 5 hourly or shorter. It was soon after my daughter had a few weeks of 7-8 hours sleep at night that i got mine back, but haven't had it since then (almost 2 months ago).

I nursed my daughter for 15 months, but started having periods again after just 5 months.
My granddaughter is 2 and still nursing and my daughter didn't have a period for a year.
So it can really vary a lot.
Kudos to you for nursing a whole year!!!

I breastfeed and my son is 4 months but some nights we give him one bottle of formulation and different nights I just feed him. I consider seeing that of the flunctuation in the feedings I did get my period for the first time at the beginning of the month, and it was once how it's always been in the past.

My wife did. Before she had our daughter, up to the day of delivery, she couldn't get enough of me, you know, not me, but my you know what, then after the baby was born, I wasn't allowed near it for a long time. I don't mean the baby. But yes, she started her periods again in a couple of months. I had to go buy the tampax, so I know.

I had a normal period while breastfeeding. That's just like saying you can't get pregnant while you breastfeed.
So not true, you can very much get pregnant while breastfeeding.

I breast fed all three of my children, and began my period about forty days after their births. I even got pregnaut during the breast feeding months with the second child in the "quarentine".
