The entire saying is "curiosity killed the cat but knowledge brought it back again". I think it speaks for itself.

curiosity + caution = SCIENCE

I think it is fairly simple, or perhaps concise. Having curiosity about something, and looking at it and trying to understand from a controlled perspective is exactly why the scientific method was created ( not that it is always a very good method, sometimes you get the most dramatic results from an uncontrolled test ). I guess another way to say it is, the most effective curiosity is tempered by a sense of caution or deliberation, usually with an emphasis on self preservation.

Just as everyone else has said, yes it can kill them, but you can also get jail time for animal cruelty. Also on top of the jail time, you could be required to pay a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a cat. I would suggest continuously calling animal control and the police. If not then pack up as many as you can and leave them on the spca's door step.
