I live in a college town, so that's a widely varying figure.
Sure is nice around Christmas, about the only time of year you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the main street.
Of course, being a college town means lots of good music, arts, and all that good stuff, so it's a bit of a trade off. My town is actually called The Village of _____, so that may tell you something about the "permanent" pop.
Of course, with high tech and medical research institutes alla round, the entire region has experienced massive growth, urban and suburban sprawl and traffic like you'd expect in a large metropolis.
Still, in ten minutes (or less) I can be in the countryside. There's even one swimming pond that hasn't been overrun, but it's only a matter of time, I fear, before I start finding crowds and litter and all that detritus of urbanity.

I live in a very rural area...fishing and farming the 2 of the biggest 'industries'. There are about 8,000 in the town and 16,000 in the county and town.

It used to be 16,000, but it's shrinking all the time (think it's nearer 15,000 now).
Local industry has died and shops shut at an alarming rate. Good job the countryside around is the bit I love.

I live in a wee hamlet in the middle of the countryside
It's beautiful
There are also about 10 cats, lots of deer, millions of pheasants, a couple of weasels, mice, rats, birds, cows (tho' no sheep or goats), spiders, wasps(Ugh!) and lots more

There's around 6000 people in my town. It has the ocean with beach of course, and a millennium coastal path which attracts a lot of visitors.
