The time has been reduced recently with the advent of computer databases. However, there is a tremendous backlog of prior approvals to be entered and like every other governmental agency, Patent's budget has been cut in order to pay for Mr. Bush's war. A reduced data emtry staff is doing the best they can.
When a patent application is recieved, someone has to put it in a pile of pending applications - the newest go on the bottom of the pile, of course - and somebody has to go through the entire database to ensure the new patent isn't an infringement on an existing patent. The Patent Office recieves a large number of applications every year, and again, with reduced staff, processing them is going to take longer. Sorry about that.

i think it takes so long for a patent to be approved because they study, and scrutinize the thing that will be patented. they will see if its an original idea or thing, not just some copy cat.

So just in case someone wants to steal it, conglomerates place spies in the system to find good ideas then they patent them first using 50 high priced lawyers.
