Great idea about renting a bike--are there lots of places to do that?

Thanks Mrsjvb! My daughter is there and needs some "mom time". That first leg of military life is the hardest.

Cannery Row is currently closed to vehicular traffic from Bubba Gumps to the Aquarium due to them FINALLY beginning construction work on the new hotel that willspan both sides of the Row. However, don't be scared off, all the shops are still open.

17 Mile drive: spend the 8 bucks and take a tour. breathtaking views and multi million dollarhomes and golf courses.

The Row: do a little wine tasting at the various tasting rooms, my favorite is Taste of Monterey. represents over 60 Monetery County wineries. indulge in a glass while sitting along their glass wall overlooking the bay watching seal bask on rocks and pelicans flying by. many nice restaurants, all sorts of tastes and prices to choose from.

Aquarium: I have seen better, but you probably will not be disappointed if you go. They just finished redoing about a third of it.

Rec Trail: much of it is paved, and you can rent Segways, quad bikes and regular bikes from various places along the trail. runs right along the water for the most part.

Fisherman's Wharf/Custom House Plaza: museums, both local and sea going, and some halfway decent restaurants. their selling point is the view they offer.

Nearby you have Carmel(yes, home of Clint Eastwood, and yes, he's frequently seen at a few local restaurants) with some GREAT shopping, more wineries, and of course.. Hollywood star power.

Salinas: Home to Steinbeck museum.

Pacific Grove: just past the Aquarium and Home of the Monarch Butterfly preserve, where they winter from November through March. Free admission.

Ft Ord: Now only a shadow of it's former glory. part of it is still operational and holds the housing for DLI students as well as our Commissary and exchange, but parts have been cleared of junk and have been turned over to the County, where they have made hiking trails and picnic areas.

Laguna Seca: recreation area and Park.

There's plenty more to do here, but this is a good start.

Bunny: some advice for your daughter: STAY AWAY FROM THE MUCKY DUCK!. a large percentage of the discipline problems that DLI students have are related to the Duck. besides, the food at Bullwhackers is way better. Better Beer at Peter B's.
