I read this in the mid 80s. The plot was a man who had to find his girfriend who I think was kidnapped by a dragon. The only part that I really remember is that the Merlin charachter has an ulcer and he advises him to drink a glass of milk. "Merlin" makes the glass appear with milk in it and drinks it and feels better.

The guy also was from modern times...he goes into this fantasy/alternate world to save his girlfriend.

The problem in finding this is that there is a so-called "Merlin's process" or "Merlin's treatment" for ulcers which consists in drinking milk. Can you remember a few more details and i will give another try with the sci fi/ fantasy databases.

hmmm....not sure sounds familiar tho....could it be the magic kingdom series by terry brooks?
been a long time since iv'e read any fantasy.
