My daughter is 4 1/2 months old. I was wondering if it would be ok to use some sunscreen on her legs. We are going to a fair tomorrow and her stroller umbrella covers everything but her legs. I don't wan to put pants on her, i live in CA so its extremly hot. What sunscreen is the best, if i should use any at all.

Do NOT use baby oil! What was that person thinking?

My child's doctor told me that the reason "they" say not to use sunscreen on babies under 6 months is that "they" are afraid that parents will get overconfident and take their babies out in the sun too much. So, by telling you not to use sunscreen, you're more likely to keep her inside.

Bottom line, it's okay to use sunscreen, but it's not okay to overexpose her to the sun, even with sunscreen. Do not put it near her eyes or on her hands (as she'll put her hands in her mouth). Go ahead and put it on her legs, but try to keep her out of the sun as much as possible. This will obviously be a challenge at the fair, but try to do it whenever you can.

Have fun!

Sunscreens are made of chemicals so test the sunscreen on your baby's legs and leave it there for a few hours... if there is no reaction then use minimal sunscreen as possible... Babies have a mildly impaired mechanism to keep cool by sweating. In addition, they have a greater risk of becoming dehydrated due to heat. Sunscreen can somewhat impair effective cooling by perspiration, so placing it on an infant could be detrimental. If you choose to use sunscreen, feed your baby frequently to prevent dehydration especailly while in the sun.
A better option would to dress your baby in light long pants or shade him/her with an umbrella. And don't take your baby out in the sun for long periods of time!

An 8 week previous toddler shouldn't use sunscreen until oked with the help of a pediatrician first. Sunscreen is for toddlers 6 month+ in age. i could ask your daughter Pediatrician in the previous utilising any sunscreen on her.

It is recommended not to use sunscreen on a baby until they are 6 months+ because the chemicals do seep into their skin and their organs have a terrible time processing it. I would suggest using zinc. Zinc does not seep into the skin but is rather a product that sits on top and it does the best to sheild your baby's skin from the sun. It would be the next best thing to pants and full shade.
Have fun at the fair!

If you have an Anti-cancer council or cancer prevention foundation they may be able to point you in the direction of good infant sunscreen.

Here in Australia the Cancer Council of Australia sells their own toddler sunscreen which is hypoallergenic and fragrance free. I use that on my 6mo. So i'd try your local cancer information people.

We also put a cotton sheet over the pram when it's in direct sunlight and bubs wears loose fitting long pants and long tops.

Why? There are those M.D.s, naturopaths, and homeopaths that believe that sunscreen actually causes skin cell changes that can lead to cancer.

Try finding light, loose-fitting long-sleeves and long pants or onesies first. Babies don't overheat the way that adults do.

If you still want sunscreen, a whole-foods store, or homeopathic shop sells organic, chemical free sunscreens. I've also used Desitin (zinc) on sensitive areas for my kids - it offers total protection, but you may not appreciate the white, clown-like makeup look!

FYI - DO NOT USE BABY OIL - or any oil based creams as they cause sunburning.

There is sunscreen specifically made for babies - a gentle formula with a really high SPF. Read the labels, talk to a pharmacist.
