Because when people are part of something secret that the general population does not know about, it makes them feel very special and gives meaning to their life, though most people on the planet would not care about it.

the secret societies are those societies whose membership are known only to the actual members of the society. these secret societies are not like any Fraternal, Religious, Political societies who proudly display their membership.
