I really wish people would look this up before they just repeat something they were told, on both sides of the issue. All I'm going to say is it was purely for political reasons, it should be legal, and people should look up for themselves why it is illegal.

And look at the response above mine - "wine is a different story" - oh yeah? You think alcohol won't cause birth defects? Or dangerous for walking or driving? You need to realize that you say that about wine BECAUSE IT IS LEGAL. The law is defining your morals on this topic.

The first weed law was in san antonio, it was used to keep mexicans out of certain areas. It was later used in Luisiana for the same reason but instead of mexicans it was the creole.
the reason its illegal now is because you need a tax stamp to sell it and they will no longer make the stamp.

It is weird that marijuana is illegal and smoking is not, but it makes you lazy. Its legal for medicinal use in california though :*)

Because it's a strong drug that should only be used for very rare medicinal purposes. It can totally disorient you for hours, and this can be dangerous for normal, everyday activites, like driving or walking.
It's not like tobacco because it's so mind altering, and there is evidence that it can affect you years after you stop smoking, and that it can cause birth defects, etc.
Wine is a different story!
