There are two basic things a bird is communicating with his call (we call it song because we like the sound). One is "This is my turf" and the other is "Come here, girl!" It's almost always the males that have such calls.

Mother Nature has her ways!

God made birds to sing because that is the way they talk to each other! I've seen birds singing, though, and I think they sing because it's fun!

We studied that once as a science project (hint, hint)--it was how many different sounds our different pet birds made--it turned out to be a guinea hen--but chickens don't sing!

Sometimes I think God made animals a certain way just for everyone to enjoy them.

Birds communicate to one another through sounds that come from their throat. It is a mixture of their breath and voice box. It sounds like singing. I'd like to believe it is. However, even birds that talk and repeat what we say are only copying our sounds and trying to communicate with us. Birds that talk have different vocal and mouth "stuff"...kid term. haha.

Birds sing for many reasons:
To greet each other, to define their territories, to let their parents know they're hungry, to attract a mate, to warn each other of approaching danger and to tell each other about good feeding spots. Go outside and listen for yourself!

This may help...this is the first quatrain of a poem I wrote.
Have you ever heard a mockingbird sing her song ?
She's announcing to the world
That she is ready to start the new day
And when the Sun arrives, she is on her way
