Alright man, I've played 2 shadow priests to lvl 60, so heres my take on it.
Shadow priests are pure ownage. As far as classes go, there is no better soloing class in the game. While you level up your shadow points in your talent tree, and become more powerful against mobs, you are head and shoulders above other classes because you can HEAL YOURSELF. Definate plus to any other class. Your going to fly through your teens once you can start putting your points into talents, and your 20's as well.
The only problem with shadow priesting is the expectations of others in groups. You have to know, that as a shadow priest, when you get up into the upper 20's, you'll seriously start to see a difference between you and your holy counterparts. You must explain to any group that you accompany that you are seriously hampered in the healing tree, and that if they are looking for a serious healer, not to expect you to cover all their needs. Hell, a restoration druid heals better then a shadow priest. Make sure that your groups know that you are not the savior of the group (even though you can be) and you will save yourself from a load of "why didn't you heal me?"s.
Another thing to do with grouping. BE SURE that you put your points in the shadow tree to reduce threat created by your offensive spells. Hell, it wouldnt hurt to put the points in your Disc. tree that lowers threat generated by all your spells. When you higher levels, and your mind blast starts critting for over 1000 damage, and your SW:P is dotting like crazy, you will put aggro faster then a Night Elf who made another moo-cow joke to a Tauren. Pace yourself. If your doing more damage then your tank, back off. Heal a bit. Make sure your not going damage crazy (like most mages do) and you will make the tanks job a WHOLE lot easier.
Um....okay, another thing. Stats. Mostly, people will tell you go straight INT, and SPI. I say, it depends on what you are doing. If you are more interested in going end game raids, all PvE, yeah, go SPI, then INT, followed by STA. But if you are going PvP, its reversed, STA, INT then SPI. You'll want those extra HP when your fighting for your life in Arathi Basin. And you'll want the higher tick restoration with SPI when your raiding.
Thats just about all I can think of right now. If you have any other question about playing a shadow priest, give me an email, I will be more then happy to help.
P.S. As a shadow priest, you will melt faces. Expect it.

There are several great websites that will advise you on the pros and cons of the many character combinations you can make. A little bit of reading will help you decide which type is best for you.
The game has a great forum & game guide online.
This is from WowWiki.com:
Much like a Warrior, the presence of a Priest is considered vital to the success of a party. There is very little argument among veteran players that the Priest is the most efficient healer in the game. The Priest also possesses a popular buff that increases a target's Stamina (Power Word: Fortitude. A Priest pairing with virtually any class can be a quite lethal combination, with the priest's partner doing the damage and the priest keeping their partner alive. In Shadowform, Priests can cause very high damage that rivals many of the ranged classes; shadow talents to increase damage output is factored in after +dmg from gear is added in, as a result allowing them to scale with gear like no other class in the game. The Priest might only be able to wear Cloth armor, but they have a spell named Power Word: Shield which absorbs damage and Inner Fire which improves armor greatly, and some Priests have Shadowform to reduce damage even more. Although they can't use Holy spells in Shadowform, they can use a special debuff called Vampiric Embrace to heal themselves based on the amount of Shadow damage they do.
