ok thanks to all of you guys that wasnt being jerks and gave nice answer. animal control has the komodo, turns out that it got loose from winter park zoo, (a few min away from my cuz's house) while they were taking out the 3 they have to send it to some reserve. and for thoses who want to know it wasnt a fully grown komodo it is only 1 year and a few months old.

Well I believe that it is illegal to own a komodo dragon as a pet because I believe they are almost endangered so I think that before you decide to keep it I would contact a local zoo and call to make sure if it is ok or not because it would be cool to have one but i would research it before owning it if it isn't illegal to keep them as pets!!

First, as another person has pointed out, Komodos are endangered.

Second, a grown Komodo Dragon moves at an ungodly speed! People in Indonesia to be eaten by them periodically.
Not to be condescending, but your question is analogous to asking if it's illegal to keep a crocodiles or a polar bear as a pet. Some animals are not pets, not compatible with humans, and should be left the hell alone.

Absolutely illegal. Komodo dragons are endangered and protected and will not even be allowed out of the country. That is why only a few zoos actually have komodo dragons. if your friend really does have one he has broken a buttload of international laws. What he probably had was a water monitor, that looks similar to the komodo just not as bulky. Komodos and water monitor are both monitor lizards and look relatively alike as adults. And also where about do you live i had a 5 foot savanna monitor that got away when a tree crashed into his greenhouse in northern NC a couple weeks ago. sob...sob his name is Zilla and he knows his name.maybe you found him for me if you live in northern NC, southern VA there is a reward.

Have you been smoking lead based paint chips again?

Your friend did not have a komodo dragon and you know it.

Very few zoos even have access to Komodo dragons. They are highly protected & not the easiest animal in the world to catch.

Your friend MAY have had a much smaller monitor lizard of some sort (komodo dragons are a type of monitor lizard.

Either you are very mistaken about the komodo dragon or you are hallucinating... which is it?

Depends on your local laws. Contact your local animal shelter or city hall to make sure. I hope your friend has the money to keep this monster feed. A komodo dragon can grow up to 10 feet and weigh over 200 pounds. They eat anything and everything and sometimes their own kind will be devoured. It is illegal to have one because they are on the endangered species list from the information that I have found.

It's cruel to keep an animal that you know nothing about and do not know how to take care of. That should be answer enough. Call your local humane society and let responsible people take over. Do the right thing.

Yes, it is illegal to keep them, and the laws/regulations are so strict that I find it highly unlikely that your friend would ever be able to get ahold of one... Are you sure it's not just some other large monitor species?

its looked down upon by most western societies, instead look into getting some underwater bunnies or waterbuffaloes as more stable pet options
