No one EVER mentions this movie: Crooklyn by Spike Lee.
It's a great story about a young girl who is growing up in a house full of brothers in Brooklyn in the 1970's.
The mother is a school teacher (played by Alfre Woodard) and the dad is an out of work musician (played by Delroy Lindo).
I've never been a big fan of Spike Lee's but this movie is different from his others. He wrote this with one of his sisters and they totally capture such an authentic perspective of a girl from a working class family in the '70's. It's wonderful!
I would also recommend Best In Show and A Mighty Wind for some good laughs
and The Color Purple for a real good cry!
Enjoy!

Beautiful Girls - Matt Dillon, Lauren Holly, Natalie Portman, Timothy Hutton, and Uma Thurman (among many others). A good movie about growing up.
Nobody's Fool - Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith and Jessica Tandy. Movie has a great cast about a quirky New York Town. Phillip Seymor Hoffman has a small part.
MirrorMask - From Henson's Muppet Company, the guy who directed Brazil and written by Neil Gaiman (of graphic comic fame). It is visually stunning and a curiosity to behold.
