I've been doing some research on this as it is a well know fact that blacks in general, don't tip well. I think that it is because of upbringing.
You see, just a few short decades ago, blacks weren't allowed to sit at the restaurant tables. My mother, who is 60 years old, recalls a time in her young adult life when she had to stand at the restaurant counter while her white friends could be seated. Because of experiences like this, many ordinary blacks did not frequent restaurants. If one does not often engage in a behavior, how would one know how to appropriately act when they are able to engage in that behavior?
Being raised in a black family, we did not go to sit-down restaurants often. Meals were homemade and home eaten. I don’t recall ever learning about tipping from my parents. The information I learned about tipping came from reading on my own as this was not as you put it "common knowledge".
Now that blacks have been eating out more, ignorance still prevails. If they were never schooled on what is an appropriate tip, how would they know? Most people aren’t into researching things like I am. Many may feel what they give is acceptable because they either don’t know or don’t care. Many may not have the money for both the meal AND the tip. Then there are some that do have the money but rather not give it all to you.
One more thing to consider it this: Wait staff expect to be given the shaft by blacks so they often provide lackluster service. Therefore, the few that would have left a decent tip are not feeling very generous after receiving poor service from a waiter that clearly treated the other patrons with far more respect. It’s a catch 22.

I have heard the same thing. I am black and I have been with people who do not want to tip. However, my fiance and I frequent many restaurants. I pay attention to how I am treated. Sometimes people DO NOT DESERVE tips! If I have the same glass of water for appetizer, entree, and dessert, why should my server get a 20% tip? I have had people be flat out rude to me. My food was not the way I ordered. My food was cold. My hostess has accused me of not being with someone after I made reservations. I have even had a server not even check to see how my food was. Sometimes I wonder why I even go out to eat. While some people (not just Black People) do not leave sufficient tips, some responsibility needs to be taken on the part of people that know they could do a better job at serving.
The stereotypes mentioned above about wanting all courses of the meal at once are ridiculous. It actually annoys me when people bring out my appetizer and turn around and bring me the entree 5 minutes later. I also do not like my salad with lots of dressing, nor do I usually request French. Treating people like second class citizens, that do not deserve options or top service gets people the crappy tip they deserve.
I hope this is not the case for you, but I am quite sure you know of lazy people who do the minimum and then piss and moan when they do not get the tip they deserve.
The few Black people you work with are not representatives of the entire Black race.
Best wishes and please do not overgeneralize.

Hey. I waitressed for 4 years in the same chinese place. I love waitressing. It really depends. I use to say that blacks on a whole tipped badly. Then I actually kept track of it. There did seem to be one group of blacks who never tipped. Their was also a whole family, aunts, uncles, grandparnets, and whenever I came in they always wanted me to join them and they were a joy to wait on. And yes they did tip. There was also the white guy who no matter how great or terrible I did that day always left 2 dollars. Really bad tip. As much as we wish racism would just go away , it wont over night. We have to change the veiw of it. Be an example. If I don't want my neices and nephews to learn it, then I try my darnest not too. People have a bad habit of grouping people together. By the way the chinese place I worked at was owned by a guy who was Taiwan, the cooks where Mexican, and I was the crazy pale white chick with the southern english accent. Honsetly if a place like that can be open for 10 years I'm pretty sure people can get over the tipping issue.

Well I read where this owner of a restaurant in Florida got sued because he charged black patrons 15% on their bills for the tip because they do not voluntarily leave one. Nothing is 100%-It's just a generalization but their must be some truth in it.
About a week after reading this I was in a Shoneys in South Carolina and we were sitting next to a black couple, and then I noticed when they were leaving the black women demanded her man go back and leave a tip on the table becuase he left nothing.
Say what you want and think what you think but this is a widespread observance, though no race of people are 100% the same.

I'm white and I did not know this until I heard it from Pastor Paul Sheppard on the radio. He's great. He told his congregation (mainly black--I'm guessing from the "Preach it Brothers" in the background) to give better tips to waitstaff! And I'm going to take your 15-20 suggestion to heart, too, as I usually only tip 10% because *hangs head in shame* it's easier to do the math for it in my head.

i think of the media pushes that way too lots.they have the perfect to vote for who they like. regrettably that's not appropriate the two way. its merely like 2 mapquest guidelines to the comparable place. those all and sundry is chosen to be elected. obama became a great %.. have been given lots executed. what's the undertaking with this race bating??? i ought to assert (my opinion) maximum all and sundry isn't racist. merely yet another "soccer situation" somewhat of specializing in genuine themes. human beings think of u.s. is a democracy, that's not! it became meant to be a Republic. exams and balances. Barrack Obama is seen to be the president who has written greater "government Orders that the different president. An government order is an order or command issued by the pinnacle of the administrative twig at some point of government. definite that's real all presidents have used them, yet they are no longer getting used what they have been meant for. government orders are in no way to pass congress in regulation making.

i have had friends who just did not get the concept of tipping. it really bothers me to the point where i have gotten into full fledged fights with them about it and i will eat in a corner alone in a restaturant refusing to dine with them behind this. i think it is an indignant self-serving attitude and it's not only etiquette but common sense when someone provides a service to you should show appreciation appropiately.
