I was flying back to the USA from Iceland, having been there 13 months in the navy. When I got to my friend's house in Ohio, I was standing with him in the living room with the TV on, but the volume off. I saw the shuttle blow up, and yelled out like a maniac, "Oh my God, the shuttle just blew up." He looked at me casually but suprised and said, You didn't know that? That happened a few hours ago." It was like a bad dream.

Do you mean Challenger? I was just a baby at the time. (I ended up going to S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Maryland for 2 years.) Columbia was the first shuttle made and I was in highschool when that happened. I remember seeing it take off in Florida when my father was working with NASA (...I was going to the named elementary school at the time...). I've never heard anything as loud, even far away on the bleachers.

I was in my 9th grade science class when we watched the very beginning of the shuttle launch, but the bell rang right then and we didn't see the aftermath. Then a few minutes into my next class, the principal came on the PA system and said that the shuttle had blown up.

At home sucking my toes. I was only two years old at the time.

I was getting up when Columbia blew up. After 9/11 the lost of a shuttle didn't seem that significant, but it was still very sad.

wow I feel old...

that was back in the day when the public school system actually stopped all schoolwork so that every television in the AV department was out and tuned in to the launch.

Are you talking about the Challenger Explosion caused by the "O" ring? that was a sad day, the day the world realized that space was not a place for nonastronauts.

I was at work. I remember walking up to the secretary to give her something and noticed her crying. When I asked her what had happened she turned up her radio. I was shocked to hear it. I went back to my desk and sat there numb for most of the day. The rest of the office had the same reaction.

I had just arrived at my video store and the phone rang. It was my wife crying. She said "Turn on the TV" and hung up.

I was sitting in my 7th grade history class when our teacher told us. I can still remember the look on the girl's face who was sitting in front of me when she turned around. Very sad.
