I only know about coaches as my husband is a coach driver. I think you're right but it worth maybe going to the ministry of transport website and finding out. Unfortunately don't know it however it should be easy to google it! Good luck!

If you switch the engine off out of rest mode then surely the trace should stop, it could be days before you re-start.
The tacho is to prove that you are driving within your hours and taking the correct breaks, it is not for recording the vehicles use!
Any doubts speak to the Dept for Transport, easier still, stop at an official weighbridge, if you approach them with a query, they are duty bound to assist, at the end of the day it is your licence, not the prat you work for, if it was, you can bet he would know!

When you are on rest/break then it should record as rest/break. If yours isnt, then it sounds like your tacho is on the blink and you need to get it fixed. Technically If you know it is on the blink then you MUST fill it out by hand- yawn.
In my experience most transport managers cant even find there own a**e with a map.

I'm a truck driver and ive been driving for 10 years and i still don't fully understand the complex laws. its ridiculous. i sometimes forget to change the mode on the tacho so sometimes i have a break but forget to put it on break so it doesn't show up on the tacho. who ever devised these laws is a tw*t. the reason they got changed is because of all the bloody eastern european drivers over here flouting the laws and causing lots of accidents. my old neighbour was eastern euro peon and openly admitted to using two different names so he could do two driving jobs and work 24/7. stupid tw*t.

if you have no trace with ignition turned off, tacho is wired up incorrectly, the only time tacho does not record is when batteries are disconnected.if this fault is found at home base and reported it is illegal to take vehicle back on road until repaired.

It is your employer's responsibility to get a faulty tachograph repaired as soon as possible, and in any case within 7 days. In the mean time you will have to record your breaks manually.

stylus vibrates when mode button is on drive or other work when on rest stylus does not vibrate so gives a very fine single line nothing to do with tacograph law
