I know what is "the Rosenberg case", but wonder why the case is mentioned in "You've Got Mail". We use the movie as our textbook to learn English in Japan.
Thank you.

I am not sure. It may have to do with the identification of the real spy behind the case- The FBI actually knew who he was but it would not give the "circus" that they wanted. The Rosenbergs were actually minor figures without any relevance in knowledge transfer (the Soviets develop the A Bomb and the dirty super in the most independently - or could have done it). A book was supposed to come about this the same time the movie was been made. It did not: The case is still very complex but it shows that by having preconcieved ideas, racism and persecution, we actually missed the real targets and lost in many other fronts. This people here may know more about the connection:

The Rosenbergs were executed, the first couple in the USA to be executed as husband and wife for being spies and selling information to the Russians.

I never saw the movie, but did it have somethng to do with passing information, perhaps secretly? If so, its likely its a reference to a married couple convicted in the early 50's of spying for the russians. This wa BIG news when it happened, as the U.S. and U.S.S.R. had just begun their cold war.

Here's lots of history:
