I'm a wannabe bass guitarist. I'm confident of mastering the bass in a matter of weeks because I've a strong musical background on the cello and piano and some experience with the double bass and guitar. However at the moment I don't have a bass and I know nothing about it, I would like to know more about it eg the role of amplifiers, etc, mostly more technical stuff. Can anyone chip in?

Thought I'd add more responses in the cooldown where no one seems to be posting answers...

Most of you didn't really answer the question... I should add that I know the bass has 4 strings and has the same tuning as the double bass. Thanks to Root and Cedgie for answers which are Best Answer material.

depending on what style u wanna play... i play in a punk band in Perth and i play a Warwick 4 string with double Humbuckers (pickups) i have a crappy old Yamaha fretless thing too which i use less often. given your musical background you may want to look at a fretless? but it depends on the style u wanna play too... i find it hard to hit notes all the way up around fret 23/24 when there are no frets (if that makes sense)

ur amp makes a diff but i find that if u go to a music shop and plug into an amp it will sound different with every guitar u play through it.... the guys in music store can show u....

invest in an effects pedal too, it could cost around the same as a guitar though,,, but it will make so much difference.

Bass guitar is staggering; if I have been you i could be battling over it. the only shrink back is that in case you adult males might desire to purchase one. however the element approximately bass guitar is that it rather impacts the sound. have you ever listened to a music stay and impulsively the bass drops out? it fairly is rather sizeable. Like, a bad chord or word interior the melody is sizeable and attractiveness of 'gross', yet whilst a bass drops out it fairly is in simple terms undesirable. Bass is the best device in a rock band, the only con is that the frets are so some distance aside and you may might desire to regulate.

If you can play the double bass you are half way there. Get to your local instrument store and get some advice there, maybe try a couple of guitars. Good luck from a bass head!!

I can tell you this..it isnt much of a role in music...bass players arent really respected in music these days....and one can accomplish the same things with synths anymore..like the bass lines on Seinfeld..all of that is strick keyboards...

So if you have piano knowledge..get yourself a Roland synth and learn that..itll serve you wat more then a Bass these days.
