You can't go online on The Sims 2 and interact with other players. If you're looking to do that then you might be interested in purchasing "The Sims Online": http://www.ea.com/official/thesims/thesimsonline/us/nai/index.jsp
It's an Sims game specific for playing online with other people. I think you have to pay for the service monthly, though. :\
You can, however, download objects and skins online for the Sims 2, if you visit their website: http://www.thesims2.com or go to Sims 2 fansites.
Hope that helped!

I play the Sims 2.
Reasons for the Sims 2 to go online - sometimes you need to use the game to install content or to put content on the Official Sims 2 site. (it does not go online to play other players but only to get free addons or to add your own content online)
In order to do this, your game must be registered so you will have a password to access the thesims2.com and its Exchange. If you do have a password and have no problem logging into the BBS or downloads area when you use your browser...
You may have a firewall that is blocking your GAME from going online with the Sims 2 applet that allows you to add downloads via the login window included with the game. It will say you're not online even if you know you are.
The first thing to do is check your firewall and see if The Sims 2 is listed among the programs that are blocked or permitted. I use Zone Alarm Pro and what I have to do is go to the programs area in the window and ADD the sims 2 to the allowed programs. Your firewall should have some sort of ADD button. All you need to do is browse to the folder that has your game installed and add it in and give permission for it to go online.
If you can't figure out how to do above, then you need set your game up to play in a WINDOW (so it pops up NOT full screen) and you can see your Firewall giving a warning about letting a new program go online, which means that the shortcut used has to have a '-w' added to the TARGET line. Find your game shortcut then add the -w to the target line, then shut the game down. Reboot and restart the game with the shortcut.
This time when you start the game and try to use it to download stuff from the offical website, you will see the firewall popup. Approve the access, then play your game! A little window from TheSims2.com will open up and give you a list of things to download and install. You can also now upload your stories and lots.

you ccan download new free content like the alienware computer, but its just some pretty neat addons. when you are in the town window, there is a little thing that looks like a star, * click on that, and if you are connected, download like crazy.
to play the sims online like an mmo, you need to buy The Sims Online game, its completly sepreat standalone product, info about it can be found here,

You can't play with other people online.
The only thing you can do online is upload your houses and sims you have made, or any meshes (new items)

um well if you bought the game then read the instructions that came with the game. If that doesn't help there should be a tech support number or email you can ask for help from.
