Without knowing the extent of "excessive", it's a bit difficult to pinpoint which of several things it could be, including those that others have already mentioned here. However, I had that problem and was diagnosed with Menorrhagia.
And due to this problem, I was also very anemic (the minimum blood count for "normal" is 10, and goes up from there. mine was a 3).
I couldn't find the website I originally found when diagnosed, but I found a few that might help you know if this is what you're experiencing. They are below.
I've also read that heavy menstruation can be caused by a Vitamin K deficiency, and any case of Menorrhagia in which the diagnosis is "...of unknown cause" should look into this possibility.
For me, hysterectomy was the treatment of choice. My mother had uterine cancer (she lost her 2-yr battle Nov 2005), and with that consideration, the acute anemia, and the Menorrhagia, my doctor and I both felt the complete hysterectomy was best for me. I'm 42 and my surgery was Jan 2006, a few days after my birthday.
Whatever the cause, there are quite a few treatments that can be utilized to help make your cycles better, and you and your doctor can determine which course of action is best for you, and take each one one-at-a-time until you find what brings the desired result.
Best wishes to you......

no specific causes, but it all depends on woman to woman. Some woman even feel great pain in abdomin while having excessive flow. Keep cool. Nothing to worry...

Excessive menstruation in a 37yrs ld lady....
Firstly "confirm" that is it EXCESSIVE...simple method is if it consist of CLOTS instead of merely liquid blood it is EXCESSIVE!!
if the lady had not undergone sterlisation/not using contraception and sexually active and having normal fertility... excess menses may not be menses at all; but it might be "unrecognised" pregnacy complication.... like Abortion!
if she is not having any child yet and she is obese, having hypertension...then it might indicate pssibility of cancer of inner lining of uterus that is "cancer of Endometrium)
if she is having worst "paining during excess menses"... she might have fibroid(benign tumour of uterine muscle), endometriosis (some menstrual blood in abdominal cavity outside uterus!!!!)
inflammation of internal genital organs(Pelvic inflammations), she might have intra uterine contraceptive device
if she is having low thyroid hormone level(hypothyroidism), if she is having infection by Tubercle basilus of endometrial cavity,if she is having diseases of COAGULATION system..all cause EXCESS menses..... better is get evaluated by PHYSICIAN
if all it excess menses is "painless" and no pelvic pathology...cause is hormonal... tcalled as "DUB"...needs hormonal treatment alone.
It's toooooo early to lable as "PREMENOPAUSAL" at age of 37 yr.. with increasing life expectancy in developing world... mean age for menopause exceeded beyond 50yrs!!
it can be sign of Neglected advanced Cancer of cervix(but may not be at 37yr....usually postmenopausal)
if she is a real case please let us know the diagnosis...

You could be entering pre-menopause. Periods will sometimes occur more frequently and for a longer duration in the time before they stop altogether.

Pre-menopause can cause that because your hormones are becoming unstable. It is normal. I bled like a stuck pig for a couple of years, then it began to recede, thank God!

fibroid tumors? perhaps a benign tumor in your uterus? If you have a 2 week flow or longer see your doc to get checked, as the tumors can cause this.
