Some vacuums are just loud. If id does not smell like burnt plastic, it is probably OK.

You can get these squishy ear plugs to use if its too loud. I think they have them in the hunting department at Walmart.

Ever hear the phrase "nothing is free"? Take it to a vacuum repair shop and have it checked out. If the motor is going find out how much to repair it. If it is too much tell them to keep it and buy a new one. If it was the belt it wouldn't be picking anything up off the floor. Also check the bag and make sure it isn't full. A full bag can cause the motor to strain and not pick up anything as well.

Check the belt to see if's tight - replace if necessary; make sure there is nothing wrapped around the beater bar & that nothing is blocking any of the hoses, entries, etc. Mack's green earplugs (in Wal-Greens) work the best, if all else fails.
