I have heard so many different meanings for Emo music. I want to know what one is the truth. So far I dont really consider it a class in music history like grunge, blues, ska, punk, etc. I have a huge problem with people talking about how bad there life is and how hard it is. If this is what this kind of music is about, witch is one of the things I've heard, I think it should burn with the 80's music.

"Emo-core" began as a term to categorize hardcore music coming out of Washington D.C. around 1986, usually referring to the bands Rites of Spring and Embrace. These bands rejected the macho posturing and tough guy stance of most hardcore up to that point, and they took a lot of heat for it.

Later, the term was shortened to "emo" after bands around the country began taking this approach. Bands like San Diego's Heroin and San Francsisco's Jawbreaker.

Then, way later, it became a marketing tool for labels to promote bands made up of children with dyed hair and terrible tattoos.

Emo is a marketing device. It isn't a new type of music. Grung (hard rock) and techno (disco) and new ska (jazz rock as opposed to old ska which is jazz) are also repackaged devices.

Emo is repackaged Goth (especially in the clothes, makeup and hairstyles) without all the fantasy elements such as vampires. Another change is the lyrics are often written in story format much like early folk rock.

I think The EMO stands for emotion. All the bands that suck now a days(at least in my opinion) like fall out boy, all american rejects, panic at the disco, ect. are considered emo. The kinda expose themselves as sooooo different, when, in fact, theyre all kinda the same. But, this is the rocknroll of our time, so i guess we just roll with it till it passes. So, in lehmans terms, i guess it means self loathing glam rock with a lot of eyeliner and wannabe punk rockers(green day) who are doing exactly what punk isnt supposed to do, become part of a corporate mechanism.
