Those helps they gave u were copied from translater and are a bit wrong, like... you have to be careful with the verb "to be" cuz it has 2 different meanings in spanish. To say "how are you" it is not "¿cómo eres?", it is "¿cómo estás?". There are 2 verbs in spanish that are translated as "be" in english: "ser" and "estar".
"ser" is used for things that are always the same.. like "whats your name?" = ¿cuál ES tu nombre? (ES is a conjugated form of "ser")
"estar" is used for things that may change, like "where are you?"="¿dónde ESTÁS?" (ESTÁS is a conjugated form of "estar")
so be careful with those 2 cuz the examples they gave you above are all wrong cuz of that word

Learn some sentence stems:
Yo quiero ... I want
No se... I don't understand
Yo tengo... I have ( plus it is used in many idioms. Yo tengo hambre translates as I am hungry, although it is literally I have hunger.)
Usted,el,ella esta... you,he,she are...
( note, you may want to have a grammar lesson on the two forms of is, in Spanish.)
There are lists of similar cognates on the net- words sound similar and have similar meanings.
For example, I bet you can guess what the following words mean:
elefante ( elephant)
telefono ( telephone)
dificil ( difficult)
simple ( pronounced sim-play) (simple)
examinacion ( pronounced ex, om, ee, naw, see, one to rhyme with bone.) ( examination)
artista ( artist)
musica ( music)
doctor (pronounced doke tore) ( doctor)
Of course, there are the simple greetings and phrases:
Hola, como esta ( Hello, how are you?)
Muy bien, gracias, y tu? ( very well, thank you, and you?)
Por favor ( pore faw vore) please
Learn the first 250 most often used words first, then fake your way through a lot by changing the English word into a Spanish pronunciation. the more difficult or scientific the language, the more similar it probably is to English.
There are numerous websites and software programs available in Spanish. There are even on line interactive college courses. Be aware that there are differnt dialects in Spanish, so sometimes a word can be offensive in one context and not in another. Cabron (goat) is an example. While you can talk about a herd of goats on a farm, do not call a man a goat in many countries. It is a big insult.
Bien suerte ( Good luck)
