I don't know that we "need" moreso than it has been impose and indoctrinated on us since we're children. We're bombarded at every corner. Do we get to hear the opposing side, that these superstitions are just that, fables, myths and man-created dogmas and myths? (NO).
Consider this premise: IF we are made in God's image, why must we lower ourselves to supplication, or to accept our given lot, not seek to elevate ourselves? Why must me genuflect rather than stand tall, why must we bow to mortals in "high" religious positions and donate to their lavish living styles, fine clothes, jewelry, limos, private planes, yachts, mansions, etc? Why aren't we taught to be self-sufficient, to rely on our own merit, our sense of excellence, of ingenuity and supreme thought process that separates us from the mediocre, those that benefit from us (eg politicians, religious leaders, demagogues) and depend on us to latch on to our efforts and try to control us and keep us down? Why can't we shake off the shackles of those supposed moral leaders who live private lives of immorality by living off the sweat, blood and tears of those who have less than others, the poor, the elderly, the disabled and seek to keep us all in a herd and under the control of the rich and the elected plutocrats?
We ALLOW them this power by sheer force of superstitious upbringing and brainwashing since our formative years!
IF God is indeed all powerful, all knowing and all perfect... what NEED does he/she have for us to have to be constantly feeding his ego with our gratitude and supplications? Will that help HIM gain more power amongst the gods or make him more powerful or more beautiful? WHY if we are made in his image would he want his image in a pleading position or position of humility and not standing tall and proud of being in HIS(her) image if it has no effect on him? He supposedly KNOWS what we feel (or don't) so why this excessive demonstration and "show" for others to see, since he judges us individually for our deeds and misdeeds and what is in our hearts and souls?

Um, because it has worked for millennia?
That's like asking "why do we need rules or laws?"
Or why do we need truth? Where does it come from?
Unless you think laws and truth can be whatever you want them to be, there is no greater truth than God's truth. Unless you think the greatest experiment in the history of the human race, called America, founded on Christian principles, is a failure because of a few greedy and self-deceived men, what would you have based it on?
Where else do you find purpose and meaning?
It doesn't have to be about fault and condemnation and control, but rather being the best you can be. How do you define that otherwise? This is the good news, not something you have to dread. It very simply works better than anything else man can come up with. Man always screws everything up. But if you simply follow your spirit, it's pretty difficult to step into the typical minefield you live in.

The question of why many humans seem to need to believe in gods is complex, but previous answerers have covered most of the bases. Gods serve a variety of emotional needs for people, including authority figure, a justifier of one's morals, and an emotional crutch in difficult times.
It might be good if we could believe that we were our own gods, so long as we don't get all egotistical and narcissistic about it. The whole "captain of your own ship" thing can be very self-empowering. I think this self-empowerment could even overcome the reluctance some people have to take personal responsibility for all their decisions.
Nietzsche described the "ubermench" or "superman" in his writings, as a person who has managed to overcome all the artificial limits placed upon him by society, culture, & religion. The ubermench has no need of gods because he is his own god. Not in the petty, egotistical Old Testament way or the sappy New Testament way but rather in the sense that he is a creator of his destiny, cultivator of his abilities, and harvester of his possibilities.
There is a modern-day philosophical movement called Extropianism which closely parallels this. Extropianism seeks to maximize human potential and speed human development & evolution partly through technological means and partly through overcoming the artificial limits placed upon us by others. The extropic equivalent of the ubermench is the posthuman, a greatly evolved being as far beyond homo sapiens as humans are above babboons. The transitional state is called transhumanism.
We humans have an incredible amount of potential, if only we could muster the will and intelligence to use it. Godhood just may be in our future.

For a true seeker, the power of God is within us. In some the power is higher that and individual is controlled by Him. In others the power is low that the individual is controlled by himself.
Your opinion that we are our own god is not totally right. It is a perpetual growth and once you gain that power you will not say that we are Gods. God created us with His power within us. To discover that power is the first stage of success. Then reaching a matured stage through growth is the perfection of it.
The humans could not study and ant or bee fully yet. Do you still feel that you are God or equal to Him? Make use of the talent within and then let us see what we can be at the end.

People have always been afraid of taking responsibility for their own lives. Notice how people gravitate towards decision makers? You tell someone they;re the captain of their own ship, and they're responsible for every single decision they make, even that of letting someone else drive, well, a lot of people aren't comfortable with responsibility.
There's also that whole "Death" thing that has people wanting a purpose in life, even if it means letting someone else tell them what to do.
Think I'm off base? How many relationships have you seen that had a dominant partner? Ever hung out with the S&M crowd? There's maybe one "Dom" for every thirty submissives/slaves.
How many people do you see blaming their probelms on external sources instead of saying "I chose this, now I need to make the most of it."
We ARE our own gods, and acknowledging that freedom and that ability to manifest is absolutely worth it.
People think they ARE going to screw up, and how will they know what is right? We, of course, already HAVE the knowledge.
Someone indoctrinated into a religion is by its own doctrines doing something VERY bad when they question it.
In short: Fear.

humans are taught to be small, and from childhood, the society, schools and teachers want to impose their authority on us to make the society work as it is working now, however sick. the fact is that we indeed are gods, but that will spell trouble for parents and the authorities. imagine if your child does not listen to you? your ego will be hurt and you will try your best to mold him back to a dummy. people then become lonely and sick and start to believe in other **** like god's supernatural powers to feel better, hope for a better future in heaven as promised by hollow religions of the ignorant. god's stories should be like fairy tales for school kids who are smarter and know where to draw the line

If mankind had no god's then we would be responsible for our own choices and our own lives. Having a god around to appease or blame is a handy way out of that.
Plus with the spiritual realm giving all of us a peak or two at it in our lives it would be too frightening to believe no one is in control.

There are particularly some tactics. gaining wisdom of is one - you have some concepts approximately faith that non secular human beings would not settle for. E.g., we expect of that God exists, yet, many don't believe that Hell is an rather place. The Bible talks approximately Hell as only dying, and the lifeless at the instant are not something. And, technology and faith at the instant are not against one yet another! Many have that concept, yet, it only isn't real. lots of the great scientists of the worldwide have been Christian - even non secular people who only dabbled in technology. maximum non secular each and every person is high-quality with technology, and vice verso to boot. So, do not enable a love of technology by way of you. For you, logic, and reason could desire to be a sturdy mindset. E.g., I looked it up, and as of 2006, purely 2.3% of persons interior the worldwide have been atheist. yet another 11.8% have been "no faith," which includes agnostics (human beings uncertain one way or the different), and people who believe in God, yet, at the instant are not area of one of the named denominations. for sure, if purely a million guy or woman in 50 would not believe in God, logic, and reason on my own might recommend that He does! So, if God exists (which you desire is real), the significant for you would be to come to a decision the way it is which you will locate him. and that's a complicated element to respond to. Many have a "conversion adventure" while it hits them that God not purely exists, yet, desires to be of their lives. Or, they locate God via examining, and examining - e.g., the Bible, or different books. and suited direction is termed the Alpha direction. this could be a chain of evenings the place they feed you (often for loose), you watch a short (40 5 min or so) video, and then there's a communicate afterwards. The direction is designed for the thinking, and the curious. it is hardship-loose to locate doubters taking the direction, and then finding God. So, this is a robust threat for you - the classes are almost everywhere. only put in "alpha direction" in Google, and locate the single nearest you. So, you have all started the suited way, via asking. And, don't be afraid to ask! Many think of you at the instant are not meant to question this God stuff, yet, only settle for. yet, in case you do not question, how are you going to ever learn? sturdy success!
