Very good question, the answer, however, is religion. Religion is a fundamental cause of almost every major conflict in the world today (or recently) regardless of whether the participants are interested in oil (Chechnya, Sudan, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Phillipines, India, Rwanda, etc.)

Religion.

Oil is a commodity and thus related activities tend to follow the "laws" of economics.

Relgion is a belief system that does not require grounding in reality or logic.

Which then is bound to be more controversial and cause of unrest?

Religion is more volatile subject wise as it inspires strong emotions.
Oil is physically volatile as it can literally go on fire.
