I have a 1988 ford ranger truck that I recently purchased. It ran like a charm, needed a muffler. so I had the muffler changed, the following day it started a rattling noise that sounded like a rod knocking. I've had several people tell me it's not a rod

Take it back to the muffler shop that made the repair, they must have left something loose or made a pipe that is too close to the undercarriage. It is no coincidence.

It could be as simple as a hanger. Something wasn't tightened up real good because if you just had the muffler replaced, it probably has something to do with the installation. Tighten up your hangers. If that doesn't work, come back and ask again. LOL!

And 84 4x4? First on Race Day!!!! Ask John Force!!!!

could be that the muffler shop loosened something underneath and forgot to tighten it back down. Get under the truck, grab the exhaust pipe (when it's cooled down of course) and rock that thing side to side and back and forth. Something must be loose down there
