I know everyone's seen it - a semi truck traveling down the freeway with a large, heavy load of tomatoes. My question is - what happens to the tomatoes at the bottom of the load? How do they not get smashed being at the bottom of the pile?

Those tomatoes are on their way to the cannery..they are made into tomato sauce, paste or ketchup so squashed ones just get dumped in with all the others..

They should be stacked in crates, not just thrown in a big pile. Otherwise, most would be lost because folks don't like buying squished tomatoes and most grocery produce experts won't okay a shipment like that. They are always crated.

usually the tomatos are in crate's or packaged. otherwise there would be a pretty big mess...
