That's the whole point, someone needs to be different to show how foolish the rest of the characters in this world are! I think she's the only educated person in the family and also in Springfield, but I think Matt has deliberately done this so that ppl can relate Lisa with them and also have some fun on seeing what a nerd she is!

She must be the missing piece in the puzzle. I mean, come on! Everybody's almost stupid. Someone has to be "the smart guy". And besides... imagine a "The Simpsons" without Lisa.

It's called adding a plot to the show. If she was like everyone else, what would be the point of watching? If every character was the same, that would be the lamest show on TV... maybe even worse than "So You Think You Can Dance".
Well, maybe not that bad,

The show needs a variety of characters to make it work. In many ways, all the characters are kind of stereotypes, and Lisa is just one example. Also, she's the smartest Simpson, while her dad and brother are not quite as intelligent--especially Homer! Marge is motherly smart, but not worldly.
So, all in all, a nice variety of characters--and that is one of the show's winning points!

lisa is complicated.
she has problems with animal abuse, because she loves animals. she also is a vegiterian, but homer likes meat so that makes it almost impossible for her. Lisa and Marge are the only civilized characters (with morals) Maggie has yet to show any sign of personality. Lisa stands up for her beliefs. Her father does many stupid things which goes againt her beliefs, so of course she stands up for them every episode!

Lisa is the opposite of Bart. Where Bart lets everything slide (No Problemo), Lisa attacks perceived problems. She is Bart's foil. The Yin to his Yang. She is trying to rise above the middle-lower class situation that she has been born into. Her innate intelligence tells her that she must. She's a fish out of water and is trying to find her place. Choose your cliche, but Lisa thinks, therefore she am.

Thats what makes her interesting on the Simpsons. She has to be a whiner. She can be annoying all the time. But it would be boring if she wasn't that way.

dude...shes a character on a TV show! Her purpose is to be a curmudgeon to accentuate or generate storylines.
No offense, but this question is just as silly as "why is Homer so dumb? or Bart so rebellious?"
