I am a postdoc at a good univ here in the US. At the same time I have a job offer from India, my home country.

If I refuse this job now, I will have to perform consistently well for three more years to go back for a better position
so that I can work independently.

If I join, I am likely to end my career right now.

Jobs in my field are scarce so If I do not perform consistenly all this while, It might be a suicice too.
I get distracted & lazy a lot of times so I am not sure
of myself either !!

plz advice

That IS a predicament! I know how difficult it can be to make such an important and life altering decision.

Because of the seriousness of the situation, I'm not sure I'd want to give you advice on what to do. Although we have basic information, we certainly can't understand the consequences of the final decision where it involves the rest of your life.

Without other details it's difficult to provide you with a responsible opinion, and I wouldn't want to be responsible for you possibly making the wrong decision because you used my advice.

I will say this. I do believe that we cannot be "truly" happy in our jobs unless we truly love what we do. People who are excited to go to work each day are that way because they do truly love what they do - they look forward to being there everyday. If you're in a job you hate, or a situation you hate, you won't be happy and won't perform your job well. And, you'd be more likely to quit that job as a result.

As far as being "distracted and lazy", YOU have control of YOU. To NOT be easily distracted and NOT be lazy is a conscious choice. You CAN CHOOSE to get up and do what you need to do even when you don't want to. No one is holding you down or forcing you to NOT do what you know you need to. YOU ARE in control of YOU. So tell YOU to get up and get going!! :-)

I'm sure you know that every person often has to do something or things they don't want to. But, they do it anyway. Why? Because they HAVE to. They make a choice to because there's no other way to accomplish what needs to be accomplished.

So here's what you should ask yourself. The career you have trained for... how badly to you want to do that kind of work? Is the work you do something you are passionate about and truly love and enjoy? Are you happy doing that work, and do you truly look forward to being at that job each day?

Then ask the same questions of the job in your home country, and compare your answers to each.

If you truly love the work you do, and it is your passion and you love doing it, then you shouldn't have any trouble being absolutely good at it and "able to perform consistently" for the 3 yrs. But if you have any doubts about your true passion toward this type of work, then you might have concerns.

I'm wondering why, if you go back to your home country to do this job that has been offered, it would completely end the career for which you've trained? Is this a situation in which if you go back, you can never come back to the U.S. and follow your dream? If so, then personally I would need to decide if I'm willing to sacrifice my entire future and future happniess to do something I may not really want to do, or won't be happy doing.

If you can go for a while, but have the option to come back if it doesn't work out, then that's different.

If you stay and do the job you love, but for some reason you don't "perform consistently" for the full 3 yrs, what happens? Why is it a requirement that you perform consistently for a specific period of 3 yrs? Is it due to grant money? Or has it to do with a cultural 'tradition' with regard to refusing the job 'at home'?

There's so much detail we need to analyze the situation that we don't have - which is why it's difficult to provide the 'right' answer. But to go one step further, many of us will be responding from the "American point of view" - from the standpoint that we as individuals are very independent, want to be in control of our own lives (with regard to choices that affect our lives), we want to be happy in what we're doing, etc. But different cultures have very different views about such things, and that's where the problem is with some of us giving you advice about what you should do.

If you are a "religious" or "spiritual" person, I would first go to the spiritual for guidance. I am a Christian, therefore God is my source of help for my life, and when I must make a decision in which the correct answer isn't clear, I go to God in prayer. I let Him know that although He already knows my situaton and needs, I want to tell Him about it. I let Him know that I trust Him to take care of these needs and to give me the answer of which way I'm supposed to go. No Bible lesson there, just the point that sometimes we must go to the source of the guidance that carries us through life - the spiritual side of us where we can gain insight and understanding of what we are to do. If you are confused about this decision, go to the spiritual for peace. The rest will follow.

Very best wishes to you! I pray that whatever you decide to do, that it will result in many blessings to your life.

It depends who has offered the job in INDIA. If returning back to India is the ultimate aim and if you have put in more than or nearing 5 years in USA, then it is better to return. Thinks may take care of themselves for any person in 30-35 age group.

My advice is stay with your job in the US till you are in a position to get a Green Card and thereafter residency. When you come back to India after all the experience you had in US you will definitely be more respected but your salary will still be much less than what you get paid in US.
