Get a chord book and learn your G, C and D chords. Use your pinkey finger when you start playing so as not to handycapp yourself. Also practice your major, minor and minor pentatonic scales in the key of G because the above chords are in that key. Start here and email me for more lessons after you have made progress.

So, if you are playing out a melody, that's really cool! Now you just need learn the chords that accompany that melody and a whole new world will open up for you! You can start finger picking. A couple of my first finger picking songs were Freight Train and Landslide. I also learned You Are My Sunshine chords as a child, but was able to finger pick the melody on top of the chords more recently. You should definitely learn to read tablature. That will help you put the melody with an accompaniment.

Well, if you can play happy birthday and twinkle twinkle, time for you to graduate up to real guitar songs! I'm not sure what type of music you like, but I think power chords should be an easy transition. Most punk songs (like early Green Day) use power chords. Look it up on a guitar tab site sometime, you'll see how easy it can be.

But you should also think about learning how to play full chords though. Try looking around your area for a good teacher who teaches you what songs you want to learn. Good luck!

Instead of learning 1 string songs, why not learn some basic chords? The G, A, C, D, and E chords are very simple and easy to learn. With those five chords, you can play many songs.
