Great question.

Ever heard of Pangia? Geographical studies have shown that Earth once mainly consisted of one large landmass or continent, referred to today as Pangia. This is where the Americas connected on their now eastern coast, to the western coasts of Europe and Africa. Many fault lines and oceanic plates in the ocean under the middle of this continent caused, over time, the landmasses to shift and split apart. Welcome to the world of Plate Tectonics. :)

Keep in mind that I am in no way a master of geography...but what I understand from my knowledge of it, is that when the fault lines split, hotspots (underwater volcanoes) arose in between the continents. Beneath the Carribean is the Galapagos hotspot, one of the most active hotspots in recent geographical times. In fact, the Galapagos Islands are known as the Fire Islands and are the home of some of the most active volcanoes on earth, which are continually (but slowly) forming new land over time!

I hope this answered your question to some degree.

Millions of years ago, the earth changed and the continent split due to a shift in the earth's plates. This shift caused the separation of continents because now oceans flooded in where the land split. It is only by chance, if you will, that these continents landed where they did. Hope this helps

Hey - funny way of noticing - actially you get on both sides but more towards the south east ya ?

May be when land was all one and it broke off and floated away - the all went clock wise leaving tiny Islands come behind them !
