Money is a great factor to look at in this case...if your a person that will spend and dont care how much it is then i would say wait for ps3 but if u want to save(dont we all) then u should get a ps2.
For starters, when ps3 comes out, most of the new game titles launched will be put out for ps3 and ps2, more so for ps2 because, if you have noticed, the same thing happend for Xbox and Xbox360
Second of all, as far as money, the ps3 will be $600 for the system and they average game will be from $90-$100 a piece, so by the time you get the system, an extra controller, and 3-4 games u will be spending about $1000.
And no telling how much the extra controller will be either cause the ps3 uses bluetooth and bluetooth is extremely expensive
And as far as the gift part of your question for if you do get the ps3, im really not sure a good title to get him as a gift because:
A) i dont no what kinda games he likes so i couldnt really suggest one
B) im not exactly sure what new titles will be lauched
And dont listen to anyone that tells you to get Xbox360 instead because the ps3 has a graphix card thats capable of running games with graphix 5 times better than the 360. It also has a DVD recorder and a 60 GB hard drive and also the bluetooth feature which i told you in one of the previous paragraphs
If you need any more information then you can email me at terryn112003@yahoo.com
Put something Playstation related in the subject so ill know its you.

although PS3 is the best gift for a man this Christmas, actually getting it in December 2006 is a very hard because there are not going to have enough stock to counter the HUGE demands. I'd say give him a new PS2 for his birthday and a new cell phone for Christmas. PS3 is for Christmas 2007.

The PS3 will run you anywhere from 5 to 6 hundred bucks, depending on what version you get, and a lot of stores have stopped taking preorders for the initial shipment. You may be stuck getting him a new PS2, because the PS3 will be very hard to find come November, when it launches.

Wait for PS3 but you can still buy PS2 games because they work on the PS3 and also the PS1 games.

If you want to buy something now - get an XBOX 360 or try to Pre-Order the PS3. You can at least show him the receipt of the pre-order - I would be happy getting that.
(I wouldn't buy a PS2 now)

PS3 all day long if you can afford it, I know it sucks that the PS2 isn't working though...you can get a used or refurbished one cheap to tie him over (get him to shut up) for the time being ;)

None. Buy XBOX or XBOX 360. PS3 is too expensive- $500! While its predecessor is a lousy machine. Microsoft's console provides a better gaming experience. Besides, it only costs $300 -$400.
