SINKING OF LUISITANIA

the causes of WW1 are:Militarism,Alliances,Imperialism & Nationalism

The causes of WW1 are basically: Militarism Alliances Imperialism Nationalism

The assasiantion of Franz Ferdinand was not the cause of WW1, because the assasination alone would have never sparked a general war.

It may have caused a local war, but it was definitely not cause of a World war.

The ultimatum that Austria-Hungary gave to Serbia caused major conflict,

the blank cheque given to Austria-Hungary by Germany caused confict,

the rivary in the alliances,

the Balkan crisis,

these factors all added up caused world war one, but not just a single event such as: the assasination of F.F.

here were 7 causes of WW 1

There were seven causes of world war one.

The first one is the Franco-Prussian war. During the Franco Prussian war France lost Allsace Lorraine to Prussia (Germany). With the loss of thier land, tension was created.

The second cause was the alliance systems. When the triple entente and triple alliance were created, all of the countries were trying to build up a stonger power against eachother.

The third cause was the Balkan Powder Keg. The Balkans were in an area that other countries wanted but they believed that if something happened there, the countries would errupt in war.

The fourth cause of WWI was imperialism. All of the countires were fighting over land in Africa to increase thier nationalism.

Nationalism is the fifth cause of WWI. People had so much nationalism that when the war was announced everyone was signing up to be included in it.

This also led to the Arms race which is the sixth cause. The Arms Race was where all of the ocuntries were building up thier military. No country wanted to be behind another country in militarism.

Then the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdiniand occured, which is the last cause of WWI. When he was killed by a Serbian, the Balkans were outraged and sparked the war to start. By the time that the Archduke was assassinated, the world was just looking for an excuse to start the war.

The sinking of the Lusitania occurred in 1915. The U.S. entry into WWI took place in April 1917. The sinking of the Lusitania had a lot to do with changes in U.S. public opinion towards Germany - but it was not the "cause" of our entry into war. After the Lusitania was sunk, Germany agreed not to attack passenger ships or neutral shipping. However in 1917 with Germany ready to make it's last push for victory, two events took place that brought the U.S. into the war:
1) The Zimmerman Telegram Jan. 1917. Germany was planning for a "total" war in 1917 and knew this would bring the U.S. into the war on the Allies side. So they tried to involve Mexico in a war with the U.S. British intelligence intercepted the message and "revealed" the plot, this led to demands for war against Germany. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimmermann_Telegram
2) in February 1917 with the collapse of Russia, Germany renewed "unrestricted" submarine warfare against all ships in European waters.
The pressure of these two events led to a renewed demand for war. In April 1917, president Wilson ask congress to declare war, "In order to make the world safe for democracy."

After the Lusitania was sunk in 1915, Germany reduced the level of submarine warfare. In 1917 Germany announced unrestricted submarine warfare. They planned to sink neutral US shipping. This forced Wilson to go to war.

Some say to make the seas safe for American travel, but the real event may have been the re-election of Woodrow Wilson. He campaigned on a no war policy, knowing that he wouldnt win re-election if he favored war. One month after his 2nd inaguration, he asked Congress to declare war.
