You are not allowed to play stairway to heaven (Led Zeppelin) in a guitar shop is because the song is about 10 minutes long !
And I guess you can't play it as you'll wear out the guitar...

You been watching Waynes World again?

Oh and it is probably because they get sick of it as majority of rock students want to learn how to play it as one of their first tunes!

First of all, to the kid that said the song sucks- it does not. It's a really nice song and it sounds GREAT. I doubt there's a "rule" that says you can't play the song but it's played a lot so guitar shops get sick of hearing it.

It's not the most overplayed song though....Smoke on the Water is. EVERYONE knows how to play that guitar riff. You don't need any guitar skills at all to play it. I'm sure my grandma could do it, so people that play it just end up looking kinda lame (especially if you play the wrong strings).

Personally, I'd rather hear someone play Stairway to Heaven than Smoke on the Water, seeing as it's a little harder.

Harmony Sovereign H1260 acoustic guitar and a Rickenbacker guitar (a 12-string guitar that was plugged directly to the soundboard). Jimmy Page used a 1959 Fender Telecaster on the original recording for the solo. For live sessions Page used Heritage Cherry Gibson EDS-1275 6/12 Doubleneck guitar. Guitar cannot be found in guitarcenter or musiciansfriend. Hope this helps and best of luck!

it actually started out as a joke in from the Wayne's World movie, but had enough truth and humor to it that alot of guitar shops now carry the sign.

Anyway, those two songs are the most overplayed songs by beginning guitarists. I know that were two of the first songs I learned how to play at anyrate. I'm pretty any guitar shop employee is sick to death of hearing it all day.

Just a minor correction. It didn't START with Wayne's World. It was INCLUDED in Wayne's World because it was such a common cultural reference.

The "No Stairway" thing has been around almost as long as Stairway to Heaven itself.

I don't understand the question. Didn't I just answer one of your questions? Can you play Smoke... and Stairway...? I used to play both, solos and all but that was years ago. Actually Smoke... was one of the first COOL songs I learned on guitar. I still remember the main chord riff pattern I think; F#mAB F#mACB F#mAB AF#m. Something like that right?

You can, you just shouldn't... imagine working at a guitar store and hearing that song played one thousand times, most likely 999 of them horribly. Both of those songs are very easy to pick up just with tabs, and they are extremely cliche. It would be like going to test drive a car and sitting in the parking lot revving the engine for 5 minutes before driving it... Just annoying.

to paraphrase it:
in the movie "wayne's world" he's at a guitar store and there's a sign on the wall that says "no stairway to heaven" (or something of that effect) and its just kind of a joke because that's what everyone plays when they're trying out guitars (dunno why, probably because everyone knows how to play them), so it comes from the movie. other than that there is no real reason.
