I don't know ....but maybe it has something to do with the fact that pants is plural as well. Both pants and panties are worn on the lower portion of the body (just something for you to thing about).

It's not always plural.
Like when you buy a bra and panty set.

It is always plural because it is a shorten word for the French word "brassieres." Also, they have cups!

I dont know.....I think its weird too and I always find it difficult to hear myself says panties....too girly I guess...I always call em underwear
