It's hypothesized that the merfolk were originally mistaken from manatees. Of course it makes me wonder how much rum a sailor would have to drink to possibly mistake an manatee for a human. Anyway, merfork don't exist. The closest you'll get is a meerkat which is a weasel like carnivore which lives in Africa.
