Why isn't there a 13th floor in hotels and is this only an American thing?

The levels of a multi-story building are numbered sequentially, from "one" or "ground" upwards. In some countries, the number 13 is considered unlucky and building owners will sometimes purposely omit the thirteenth floor. Even landlords who are not themselves superstitious realize that the rentability of suites on the 13th floor might be compromised because of superstitious tenants, or tenants who are afraid their own customers might be superstitious.

There are. They may not all be LABELED as such, but calling the 13th floor the 14th floor doesn't make it reality.

The suspicious number 13 isn't an international thing, but there is enough Western influence around the globe, one is bound to find examples in other countries.

13 is said to be an "unlucky" number, although in reality EVERY building with more than 13 floors, of course has a 13th floor, the owners just choose not to label it as such!

13 is the unlucky number, don't worry, my old office in the UK didn't have a 13th floor either !

But saying that, not all buildings have a missing 13th floor.
