There is actually a good reason why most religions don't encourage homosexuality. Think back to say 3000 years ago when people lived in mud-brick cities like Babylon and Jerusalem. People lived in small groups united as tribes by a common religion - these groups needed workers, warriors and children. Homosexuals would not provide more children and the whole settlement would suffer if even one person was not providing a vital new generation. Thus religions were against homosexulaity as it threatened their peoples.
This state of small groups at war continued until the Roman conquests and began again after the fall of Rome. It was not until Europe became Christian, and the Middle East became Islamic that the situation became stable enough to support non-breeding adults (as monks, nuns, homosexuals etc) but by this period the rules had been set and would not change.
Nowerdays it would be fine to be gay but religions cannot really alter what they once claimed infaliable and as such remain homophobic for no good reason. Because devout people consider all outsiders a treat to their beliefs they will hate gays as much as followers of other religions, if not more so as they an "enemy within" that is to say they have theoption of chosing religion over sexuality but prefer (in moast ways quite sensibly) te live a happy life as a homosexual.
Personally I do believe in God but more importantly in the Love of God which in my opinion includes homosexuals (like many of my friends and family members are).
Have a great day.

It does get interesting and seem very hypocritical for sure. While i can't speak of Muslims and Jews, the few I know accept me without an issue, from what I can see those who are using the Bible to back their own prejudice have bigger issues than misinterpretation. It's about power and what boils down to a lack of faith. They can't simply be satisfied by "not being gay" themselves, you can't do as you like either and your beliefs don't matter. They aren't happy that you can ignore them and it truly makes them angry when you laugh at them. That's why they try so hard to force their beliefs into laws to govern all of us. Apparently, because they are taught everything that doesn't follow their belief is evil, they think they have some sort of moral imparative to "oppose" evil and forget that forcing your will upon another, regardless of how you rationalize it, is very akin to rape. The other aspect is they don't seem to be satisfied with what their religion teaches. They will NOT shake the dust from their feet and move on from someone or some where that does not want to hear their words nor accept that their "god" will punish the unbelievers and those he said he would. They are insulted seeing others who ignore them continue to prosper against what they were taught and feel the need to take vengence. They are the ones, in my opinion, that are truly sad, sick, and need help. As it stands, until they can be made to see what they are doing, I will oppose them in every way possible.

Religious people are brainwashed from first day in sunday school to believe inthings - invisible and unproven- without question. There are words in their book that talk about men lying with men (tranlated how many times and now in English) that they take to mean gay men having sex. Thei is considered a greivous sin against their god, therefore they are taught to hate us- ok maybe not us - just our unnatural acts against nature. They never question the stories. They never look to science. They never take notice that many mammals take same sex partners. They are taught hate and that will not change without a serious intervention.
The only thing we can do is EACH ONE TEACH ONE. . For every person whose life we effect in a positive way, it's one more person on our side. And that person will teach acceptance to his/her children. It's a slow process, but it works.

well not all religous people hate gays and lesbians.I know plenty of religious people who are friends with homosexuals and bisexuals. Also true christians do not hate anyone. They love all god's children.Anyone who thinks that homosexuals are against god etc never really read the bible.Seeing I know plenty of churches that read the bible and says it doesn't say anything about homosexuality in it.Seeing back then they all thought we were all heterosexuals. Also homosexuality wasn't known til the 1900s.God does love us all. We're all his children.true a good person is a good person whatever their lifestyle is or religion.by the way homosexuality isn't a choice.. it's the way homosexuals were made.God made homosexuals..there are good people out there but they're rare.

There are certain cults within the Christian world that control their members through fear. These are the same cults that would teach a teen that masturbation is wrong. The teen is going to do it anyway, but now he has a dirty little secret he must keep, and thus the church has him in check. It's the same with homosexuality. If you don't speak out on homosexuality, maybe you are one! And what a dirty little secret to keep that would be! FEAR.
Most Christians aren't this way. Its just those in these right wing cults are very vocal, and in today's society, the news media caters to the bizarre and sensational, so the so-called Christian leaders who get to be on meet the press are actually the Rev Jim Jones's of today.

I am not sure if hate is the right word but here is my answer to your question: I think their religious beliefs actually have little to do with their disgust of homosexuals as persons. They fear anyone who is different from them and who they think threatens their lifestyle or livelihood. That could be anyone, any minority group, any ethnic group. They use religion as a weapon to backup and justify their meanness towards other people. Most of the most virulent zealots actually have very little understanding of human psychology at all, let alone sexual orientation. They would be shocked to find out that fellow church members, their pastors, their friends, people in their men's and women's groups, and their own family members are not straight. Their entire worlds would fall apart.

I am a gay man and have known I was gay for most of my 25 years of living. I can tell you that as time moves on, I'm coming across alot less haters than ever before. Although, its a fact that the haters are still everywhere. I have to admit, I am afraid to go to church and I love God. I'm sure that God understands my discomfort around his own children. One day all of the religious bigots will come to the realization that God is love and that no love is wrong.

Simple. They are cowards. 150 years ago they used their religion to justify slavery. They were the many, Africans were the few. It was easy to justify their bigotry because Africans were a powerless minority. And for those that did not believe in it, they kept quiet because it did not effect them. It wasn't like the slaves were going to rise up and kill them.
Now it is the gay's turn. It is easy to say "homosexuality is evil" and make it about religion when they are at best only 10% of the population. They can mistranslate the words of drunken prophets from 4000 years ago and get more money.
Have you noticed how fundamentalist christians have taken to playing the victim. How it is about their rights and their god? That is the last refuge of a coward. To blame others for your problems.

hypnoticfly,
This is so central to why I come here. I want people to know about Jesus, and that you don't have to change a bit! I have so much to say on this subject. Standby and I'll finish, okay? I'm a Protestant Christian who would love to show that God is not against you, you need the covering of Christ, just like those moron fundies do. Standby.
Nevermind those other Christians that have hatred for you. Jesus is a friend of sinners, that is, He loved those that knew they were sinners. The Religious folk are the ones He had trouble with, they instigated His death, but that was a fulfilment of prophesy.
As far as being good, as God saw it, there were none. If you use a human standard to account for what is good, and what is not good, you are playing into what the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil did to us. Don't fall for it. It's our nature decieving us. We have the ability to sin born with us. It's a deck of cards that is stacked against us.
Rather, trust in God. I use the Bible in this regard better than those hateful people do. It's because they have weeds growing with their wheat more than I do. This is because they accept tradition more than I do. Somehow God raised me to feel unattached to those traditions.
I would be so glad to answer any further questions you might have about this subject. Just click on my name and we'll talk. Okay?
