From the previews on television, it looks like it might be a remake of the English film of the same name: creepy island, weird residents, disappearing children, and a looming ritual. I just haven't been able to get confirmation on whether or not it's the same story, retold for an American audience. Any information you have would be appreciated.

It is the same story with some slight changes. I haven't seen the new one yet, but one difference I noticed is - he is a father looking for his daughter after his estranged wife reported she disappeared.

Yes, it is a remake. I haven't seen the new version yet but it seems different than the original, same story line though. It's probably just updated, so instead of taking place in the 1970's it may take place in 2006 or so. I'm not 100% sure on that, it's just what I've gathered from previews.
