I have experience with abnormal periods. Since not having a period in such a long time, it is normal to have large blood clots (so the doctors have told me) and it is just the shedding of the uterus walls. However, if the bleeding persists for too long of time...I myself, would just go to the doctor and have it checked out.

Have you been on birth control that stopped your period. If so than it may be nothing to worry about. If you haven't had a period for unexplained reasons or the bleeding doesn't slack off you HAVE TO see a doctor. Check and see if there is a family planning clinic in your area, they will probably see you for free. If there isn't shell out the money for a dr visit. Talk to them ahead of time they might have a payment plan if the bill is to big for you to pay all at once.

Periods are the result of the uterus shedding every month. The clots that we see are pieces of our uterus. Since you haven't shedded in a year, your uterus got pretty thick. So when you did get your period, it's heavy, clotty and bloody and it lasts a lot longer than 5 days.
If you want to go to a doctor, find a Planned Parenthood. They work with people who have no insurance.
Also, go to the drug store and get some iron pills (or eat your weight in spinach).
