when we put our left leg forward, there is a shift of weight to our left side. So, to balance it, the right hand automatically comes forward. Same for the other side
So, the main purpose is balance

its usually when we walk faster, that this occurs,,,,, for strength and fluid motion,,,, and of course balance.
we wouldn't get to that fresh baked pie before the others if we tryed to walk fast without pivoting our center body and swinging the arms.
