I was in Spain earlier (January) and airfare from San Francisco to Madrid was 756 R/T. Just checked flights for next Jan and cost is up about $60. Please note that this time period is considered "off season" prices are double during summer and peak times.
You can stay cheap in student hostels, but tough to get some real sleep.
Also check costs with a travel agent to get a comparison rate. :)
