Do they have access to students personal info.? I had this one professor that knew me all to well? But I did not volunteer any info about myself, grades other classes etc. When i turned him down for a drink he made it known to me that we were the same age and he lived close by-also made a crack about a class i w'd a year ago? When i questioned him he gave me some lame excuse that he googled me-but some things are impossible to know? W/ out my file at hand -what is your opinion? Do students have no privacy from their teachers?

Your professors do indeed have access to some personal information about their students, especially if they are advisors.

For example, I can look up the transcript and home address and phone of any student who has taken any of my classes.

However, at my university, students have the option of keeping some information private (such as their home address and phone number).

I think the professor in the incident you describe acted unethically, because it sounds like he looked up your transcript (and address) without a valid academic reason. And it sounds like he was hitting on you, which is also ethically problematic, since there are university policies which prohibit this type of thing. Frankly, he just sounds creepy. I'd talk to the department chair about him if I were you.

Yes, they can get that type of information if they put their minds to it... but it is unusual for them to do that.
